Overview

Bible by Midvash lets you quote the Bible in your EmDash posts without copy-pasting. Open a post, type a reference like John 3:16, Psalm 23 or Romans 8:28-39, pick a translation, and the passage is added to your text as a quote, with the reference and the translation's credit.

What you get in this Marketplace edition

  • Insert verse panel beside the editor, for posts, pages and projects.
  • 23 free Bible translations in English, Portuguese and Spanish: KJV, Berean Standard Bible (BSB), World English Bible (WEB), ASV, Geneva 1599, Bíblia Livre (Almeida), Reina-Valera 1909 and more.
  • Book names in three languages: John 3:16, João 3:16 and Juan 3:16 all work, with common abbreviations (Jn 3:16, 1 Cor 13).
  • Whole chapters or verse ranges: Psalm 23 brings the full psalm, Matthew 5:3-12 brings the Beatitudes.
  • Proper attribution: each quote ends with the reference and the translation's title and license, which openly licensed (CC BY) translations require. Optionally the reference links to the passage on midvash.com.
  • JSON routes (lookup, passages, versions) for your theme, and a scan MCP tool that finds Bible references in any text.

What this edition does not do

The hover tooltip (verse preview when a reader points at a reference on your public pages) needs a script on every page. EmDash only lets trusted plugins add scripts, so the tooltip is available only in the npm edition. See Installation for both editions.

FAQ

Is it free?

Yes. The plugin is MIT licensed and the Midvash Bible API is free and public, with no account or API key.

Which Bible translations are available?

23 openly licensed translations in English, Portuguese and Spanish, including KJV, BSB, WEB, ASV, Young's Literal, Darby, Geneva 1599, Douay-Rheims, Bíblia Livre (Almeida), Almeida 1911, Reina-Valera 1909 and Reina-Valera Gómez. The API only serves translations it is allowed to share, so copyrighted ones like NIV or ESV are not offered.

Why don't I see a hover tooltip on my pages?

Tooltips need a script on every public page, and EmDash only allows that for trusted plugins. Use the npm edition (see Installation) if you want tooltips.

Where does the verse go when I insert it?

At the end of the text, as a quote. EmDash's editor API replaces the whole field and has no cursor position. The editor shows the change first, and nothing is saved until you save.

The panel doesn't appear. Why?

It shows only on entries that were saved at least once, in the posts, pages or projects collections, with a Portable Text field named content.

Which languages can I type references in?

English, Portuguese and Spanish book names and their usual abbreviations: 1 Corinthians 13, 1 Coríntios 13, 1 Corintios 13, 1 Cor 13.

What is Midvash?

Midvash is a daily Bible devotional with study tools on the web, iOS and Android. This plugin and the public API are part of how we share Scripture freely.

Security

What the plugin can access

  • Network: only https://api.midvash.com, to fetch verse text and the list of translations.
  • Editor draft: reads the content field of the entry open in the editor and proposes one change to it (the inserted quote). You review the change in the editor; nothing is saved until you save.
  • Plugin storage: your settings and a cache of verse text.

What it sends

Only the Bible reference and the translation (for example john 3:16 in kjv). No post content, user data, cookies or tracking.

Installation

Bible by Midvash comes in two editions. Pick the one that fits your site.

Marketplace (this listing) npm (trusted) Insert verse panel in the editor ✅ ❌ Hover tooltips on public pages ❌ ✅ Auto-link references to midvash.com ❌ ✅ JSON routes, settings page, MCP scan tool ✅ ✅

Marketplace edition

  1. Install Bible by Midvash from the EmDash Marketplace and approve its access: network requests to api.midvash.com only, plus reading and proposing changes to the editor draft of the content field.
  2. Optional: open Plugins → Bible by Midvash to choose the default translation and whether the reference links to midvash.com (the showReadMore setting).
  3. Open a saved post, page or project and expand the Bible verse panel beside the editor.
  4. Type a reference, choose the translation and press Insert at the end. Review the change in the editor and save.

The panel works on the posts, pages and projects collections, on their Portable Text content field (the layout of the EmDash templates). The quote is added at the end of the text, because EmDash's editor API replaces the whole field and does not know where your cursor is. Move it where you want before saving.

npm edition (hover tooltips)

Install the package and register it in astro.config.mjs:

npm install @midvash/emdash-plugin-bible
import { biblePlugin } from "@midvash/emdash-plugin-bible";

export default defineConfig({
  integrations: [emdash({ plugins: [biblePlugin()] })],
});
